A staggering number of friends, neighbors, members of the armed forces and complete strangers came out to support the family of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Terry Edward “T.J.” Honeycutt Jr. at his funeral in La Plata on Monday morning.

Honeycutt, 19, of Waldorf died from injuries sustained while stationed in Afghanistan in late October.

Inside New Life Church, hundreds of people filled the sanctuary for his memorial service. They were shown a video on two large screens of Honeycutt’s playing the guitar. Mourners were silent, watching the film of Honeycutt doing one of the many things he most enjoyed.

Outside, about 3,000 people lined the entrance of the church and along U.S. 301.

It was more than a memorial service, said the Rev. Dr. Richard Logsdon, who led the service. It was a celebration “of a life well-lived,” he said.

During the weekend, it was reported that a protest group would appear for the services, so the large number of supporters for Honeycutt did not allow for protestors to be noticed.

The service lasted approximately an hour, before a procession led the way to Arlington National Cemetery in Virigina for burial.
